The Rents in Seoul

Last week, my parents came to visit us for six days.  We had been looking forward to their arrival for so long!  Finally they were here!  We had a great time showing them our city and our day-to-day lives.  We walked a ton, ate a ton, rested, played games, and had an all around great time.  We spent most of our time taking them around our neighborhood and surrounding areas, but also took some time to go to a folk village.  We're HOPING they will return soon so we can see everything we missed.  We're also hoping my man's parents will make it out here soon!

Some of the things we did included:
  • Eating Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern and homemade foods as well as New York brick oven pizza.
  • Visiting the Yangaje Flower Market (see previous post)
  • Giving a tour of our school as well as walking up and down Itaewon (our hood) -- a foreigner heavy area.
  • Walking from our house straight uphill to Namsan Tower (and then all the way back down).
  • Trying to find food in Myeongdong and watching Man of Steel (can we all please have those two and a half hours back?)
  • Going to our church, New Harvest Ministry.
  • Meeting up with one of my mom's old students and getting great pizza! (Can't wait to go back to Brick Oven in Gangnam)
  • Walking, browsing, snacking and shopping in Insadong.
  • Walking around the Korean Folk Village in Suwon.
All in all we had a great time and could have spent more time, but I know they were ready to get home after spending time in Hawaii!  We welcome any and all visitors and loved showing them around!

Yangjae Flower Market

Today was doubly special because I was finally able to go to the Yangjae Flower Market, AND my parents are here to come with!!  I was so thankful to have my dad with me to give me adice about what to buy and how to plant things!

I had read more than a year ago that I could buy herbs there and I've wanted to go ever since.  Let's just say it's massive!  By far the biggest plant area/green house I've ever seen (my dad too).  We were really only able to check out about two buildings but there are a number more!  There were countless succulents, cacti, orchids, house plants, hanging plants...I don't really know what anything is but there was so much to see!  I'm looking forward to going back and spending more time choosing some plants for our patio, for our home, as well as for my classroom.

Today we just bought a big container, some soil, plant food (for our large indoor plants), terracotta pots, 5 basil plants (only 2,000 Won each/$2.00) some spearmint (since the worms at mine), a big rosemary plant and some chive seeds.

I'm going to try planting them all together, as well as leaving some basil inside and seeing what happens.  I'd love to make some homemade pesto!

Summer's Here!

Summer is so so sweet.  The school year ended slowly and we drifted softly into summer and it feels like I'm free as a bird!  We're so happy to have a break from school until August!  Last night, a Monday, we were laying around and my man suggested we have a fried chicken picnic by the river.  The thought is unfathomable for a Monday night during the school year.

The Seoulites came out to play and the weather was perfect and the sun set and the twinkling lights were left.  We're blessed to live so close to the Han River, which cuts Seoul in half.  Walk, bike, play, eat...we hope to make it down there more often now that free time is suddenly an option.

We're staying here this summer and are very excited.  Lots of time to work on my "hobbies", including photographing which I hope to share here!

My parents come tomorrow and we are SO EXCITED to have them here!!!  Check back for pics from our adventures!

Stupid Mint Worm

I was so excited a few weeks ago when I got some mint and rosemary plants.  I watered them faithfully every day until the day I noticed, overnight, some little caterpillars got to my mint plants and ate them right up.  Totally ruined!  (Please note I tore off a bunch of leaves that's it looks so horrible.) I was interested in container gardening, but now after the mint worm disappointment I'm scared...but we just got a few house plants, I'm looking forward to seeing how those will do!

1.5 Days Left!

I just finished uploading my grades for the end of the school year.

It feels like the weight of the world is lifted off my shoulders.

One and a half days and then two more days of work days and then FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Can't wait can't wait can't wait can't wait.
